How To Remove Red Wine Stain From Carpet

It can happen to anyone… one moment you’re chatting animatedly with your friend about the latest episode of Dancing with the Stars and the next you’re observing your almost-full glass of 2016 vintage British Columbia VQA Cabernet-Sauvignon majestically sailing through the air en-route to a nasty collision with your cream coloured broadloom living room carpet You and your friend stare silently for several beats, mouths agape. One of you mutters “Don’t panic.”

You both proceed to panic. You rush to grab an armload of cloths, towels, old socks from the dirty laundry, your Persian cat… anything mildy absorbent. Your friend whips out her smartphone and finds this page online… Sound familiar?

The good news is that if the correct steps are taken right away, we can all forget this ever happened and get back to the TV show. Let’s take five deep calming breaths and get started.

You will need:

– Several absorbent cloths (or some ugly towels that you didn’t like anyway).

– A bottle of Dri-Way’s famous Non-Toxic Spot Remover.*

– A large coffee table book (we’re serious).

1. Time to get down and press your first cloth onto the stain. The goal is to absorb as much wine as possible, being careful to apply steady pressure. Resist the urge to wipe from side to side. Continue blotting with new cloths until no more wine transfers into the dry cloth.

2. Next, take your bottle of Non-Toxic Spot Remover and mix it 1:8 with cold water in a mixing bowl. Dampen a fresh cloth with the solution and repeat the blotting process with a moistened cloth (after testing in an inconspicuous area). You can lightly rub down the carpet fibres, always moving toward the centre of the mark, never outward. Step on the cloth to increase the pressure. Continue this process until no more wine is transferring to the cloth.

3. Finally, dampen another cloth with the solution and lay it completely flat over the entire stain. Ensure there are no folds or wrinkles. Take several clean, dry cloths (or that ugly towel) and lay them one by one completely flat on top. Here’s where that coffee table book comes in: Lay it on the towels, then proceed to find anything heavy to leave on top; e.g. That set of dumbells nobody ever uses, that 30 year-old stack of National Geographic magazines, or aunt Myrtles fruit cake. The more weight the better. Leave this on for 24 hours then take a look!

This method removes many common wine stains on most fabrics, but results vary widely. There are more advanced home remedies but hey, you’re not a chemist and you got some Dancing with the Stars to catch up on.

*Don’t have a bottle of our famous Non Toxic Spot Remover yet? Just email us at info@dri-way.ca and we’ll get a FREE bottle to you right away. Can’t wait? For a substitute, try mixing one teaspoon of mild hand dishwashing fluid (without skin conditioners) into a cup of cold water.

Deep Roots of Service in Greater Victoria

The Dri-Way story begins in the early 1970’s when founder Gordon Roberts was finishing a 27 year career as an industrial electrician serving at Esquimalt’s Naval dockyard.

Searching for a way to provide for his growing family while continuing to serve the local community, he realized there was a desperate need for a high-quality in-home cleaning service. He researched and educated himself on the topic, identified the best equipment available at that time, then quickly built up a flourishing service business simply called ‘Carpet Care’ which had crews serving both the Victoria and Vancouver areas.

gordon-and-connie

Now well retired, Gordon & Connie Roberts reflect on a legacy of service.

With wife Connie supporting by busily answering customer calls (often on the family phone with 7 kids making a racket in the background!), little did he know that he had just begun a proud, decades-long tradition of Roberts family owned and operated cleaning services that has included all four of Gordon & Connie Roberts’ sons.

By the mid-1980’s the three eldest Roberts boys Roger, Robin, and Stephen, were fully involved in the family business. The latest techniques were incorporated and “Dri-Way”, Victoria’s first low-moisture cleaning service was introduced. Shortly after, “Lug-A-Rug” (now Luv-A-Rug) was developed as a premier in-shop rug cleaning specialty.

Treena & Nathan Roberts

Nathan & Treena receive their 2016 BBB Torch Awards Citation.

The tradition continues: Today, elder son Robin and his wife Linda own and operate Oxy-Dry, the most successful cleaning service in the Okanagan, and Stephen runs Luv-A-Rug as not only the premier oriental rug cleaning service in Victoria, but the entire region. Indeed, Stephen (Dusty) Roberts is world-renowned in the rug cleaning industry as a technical expert, educator, and provider of in-plant rug cleaning equipment.

As for the in-home cleaning service, Gordon’s youngest son Nathan and his wife Treena are now running the Dri-Way service. This latest generation has been at the wheel since 2005 steadily providing exemplary service and maintaining a reputation that is second to none.

As Better Business Bureau Torch Award 2016 Finalists, Nathan & Treena are looking forward to “Wowing” you with their service.

Instructions for Dri-Way’s famous Non Toxic Spot Fluid

bad cat

Let me guess: Company’s coming in half an hour and ‘Toonces” has decided to improve your living room carpet’s appearance with several strategically-placed furballs?

Well, grab a few cloths and your bottle of Dri-Way’s famous Non-Toxic-Spot-Fluid* and let’s get to work!

Plan A:

1. The key with any spot removal is to take action before it dries and sets in. Carefully scoop up any excess material and prevent it from spreading.

2. Once you’ve physically removed as much material as you can, begin laying down plenty of cloths or towels to gently absorb moisture. Don’t brush or rub sideways, apply steady downward pressure.

3. Take your bottle of  Non-Toxic Spot Fluid and (after first testing it in a hidden area) apply it full strength to an absorbent cloth or towel. Work moistened cloth from outside of stain or spotted area towards the centre to avoid spreading. Resist the urge to brush excessively as this can quickly distort the fibres leading to a permanent frizzed-up appearance.

4. Rinse the area with a different water-moistened cloth.

5. Repeat steps 4-5 as required.

6. Dry area by gently tamping with a third fresh, dry cloths

Still more spot left? Try plan B:

1. Moisten one cloth with our Non Toxic Spot Fluid and lay it completely flat over the entire stain. Ensure there are no folds or wrinkles.

2. Take several clean, dry cloths and lay them one by one completely flat on top.

3. Find a large, flat, sturdy object like a coffee-table book and lay that on top of your layered towels. Add more weight on top of that… as much weight as you can. Leave this compress in place for 5-24 hours.

Spot or stain still there after all that? Try plan C:

Plan C is to call us! We’d be happy to advise you over the phone if something more advanced is required here.

*Don’t have a bottle of our famous Non Toxic Spot Fluid yet, or you need a FREE refill? Just call or email us at info@dri-way.ca and we’ll get a FREE bottle to you right away!

warning

Warning: Beware of cleaners who offer to use wet or ‘steam’ methods to clean area rugs in your home. HWE (hot water extraction) may be a useful technique in the controlled environment of a cleaning plant, but can lead to disaster when used improperly in the home risking damage to your valuable rugs and the floors beneath.

Water Smart Carpet Cleaning in Greater Victoria BC

water   Vancouver Island and Greater Victoria may receive an abundance of rainfall but we must all be responsible in how we use this precious resource. When you take thoughtful steps around your home -like selecting high-efficiency appliances & shower fittings, and checking for small leaks- you’re not only saving money on your water bill, you’re doing your part to preserve the watershed. The CRD lays out helpful guidelines and tips on how to conserve water at your home and business and choosing a VLM (Very Low Moisture) carpet cleaner is one more way you can make a sustainable choice. VLM, or ‘Dry’ carpet cleaning is becoming a more popular alternative to the old water-wasting methods.

Too Much Water?

Did you know that HWE (Hot Water Extraction) carpet cleaners use over 40 gallons to clean an average home, and in some cases up to 300 gallons may be used to clean just 1000 square feet of carpet? While HWE is a method is a good method for certain situations and can garner excellent results in the hands of an experienced technician, all too often overwetting can occur. This is not only wasteful of our valuable water supply, in some extreme cases it can lead to permanent carpet and underpad damage, shrinkage, mildew, mold, and even a bloom in odour-causing bacteria.

“My carpets were wet for way too long, it was inconvenient!”

We hear this complaint almost daily as new customers to us recount their previous wet-cleaning experience. Today’s VLM technologies allow us to deeply clean without risking the problem of overwetting. Of course, we do use some water for cleaning, but our VLM methods typically use 20 times less water to get the job done -about 2 gallons for a typical home. Dri-Way means you can have fresh, clean, hygienic, and DRY carpets usually within just 30-90 minutes.

“When the carpets finally dried, all the spots came back!”

Isn’t it irritating to have paid good money only to have the exact same spots return hours or days after an inexperienced wet cleaner has left? This is another all-too-familiar problem often called “wick-back”. This is an inherent problem for HWE that has been solved by modern advances is low moisture cleaning technology. Our clients report that spots they thought were permanent are gone for good.

Given the risks and inconvenience of wet carpet cleaning, coupled with the unnecessary overuse of water, it’s an easy decision to switch to a more ecologically practical VLM method provider. Modern dry carpet cleaning gets excellent results and extends the life of carpets and rugs in your home. There’s just no good reason to carry on with methods that place heavy demands on our watershed. Since 1986 our family business has been serving Greater Victoria from Sooke to Sidney with our always improving dry carpet cleaning service.

Green Carpet Cleaning in Victoria BC

Everyone is more aware than ever that our local, regional and global environment is interconnected. Companies and service providers including ecologically aware carpet cleaners are rising to meet today’s challenges by employing smarter, greener innovations. Eco-friendly service providers pay attention to things that matter to you – like water and energy usage – while avoiding obsolete methods that relied on unsafe chemicals, fossil fuels, perfumes, and other pollutants.

 Three decades of Eco-Friendly Cleaning

For over forty years the Roberts family has been a leader in green carpet cleaning in Greater Victoria. When founder Gordon Roberts first began cleaning in the early 1970’s there wasn’t much choice in equipment and methods. Then, after more than a decade of service, Gordon learned of a revolutionary new way to clean that used far less water. In 1986, Gordon and his sons Stephen and Robin introduced the first dry carpet cleaning service to Victoria. The name “Dri-Way” was coined to describe the new water saving techniques. Since then our family has continually innovated with the latest in smart technologies to provide the best results and outstanding service. Our VLM (Very Low Moisture) methods may take more time and effort, but we refuse to use harsh chemicals or processes that are easier and faster, because that would compromise our quality and our ethical standards.

Here on Vancouver Island we are part of a living, breathing rainforest with a fragile ecosystem surrounding our homes and workplaces. From Sooke to Oak Bay to Sidney, we are all cognizant of the environmental impact of our daily choices. That’s why we choose to use only the most energy efficient equipment, and use about 20 times less water than wet method carpet cleaners. We can do this without sacrificing cleaning power, because our VLM methods deeply clean to provide you with carpet beautification and renewal, while removing stains, dirt, grit, sand, and allergens. Our techniques allow your carpets and upholstery to be dry and ready for full use, usually 30-90 minutes after completion, in an environmentally responsible way.

Green Seal Certified Products

Because our methods are so efficient, we need only a tiny amount of cleaning solution; therefore the products we rely on are Green Seal Certified. Many products claim they are ‘green’ or ‘natural’ but in many cases these are simply advertising buzzwords. Only Green Seal is a government-authorized certification. It is costly and time consuming for manufacturers to earn; but we think our customers are worth it. These products must meet stringent protocols before being allowed to display this sought-after designation. Green Seal Certified cleaning solutions have been rigorously tested to be hypoallergenic, neutral in PH, odourless, and contain no VOC’s.

green-seal

We only use products that we would use in our own homes and around our own children and pets. With Dri-Way, you can rest assured that your home’s carpets and upholstery will look and feel beautiful and clean, while knowing that you have made the best choice for your family’s health and that of our precious local environment.

Three decades after founder Gordon Roberts introduced green carpet cleaning to Greater Victoria, son Nathan Roberts and his wife Treena are the latest owner-operators in this proud family business. We look forward to serving you during the next thirty years!
